What is Qatar Family Visit Visa?

Qatar Family Visit Visa is a type of short-term visa that enables expatriate residents to bring their father, mother, wife, children, or relatives of the first and second grades to Qatar for a short visit. The visa is issued for one month and can be extended up to six months (in some cases).

Please Note: This is a short-term visa for visiting purposes only. Foreign employees who wish to sponsor their families to live long-term in Qatar should refer to the Family Residence Visa Procedure.

This article explains the requirements, documents, application process, visa cost, and other details of the Qatar Family Visit Visa.

If you are on a family visit visa that is expiring during the FIFA World Cup 2022, make sure to change your family visit visa to a Hayya Card visa. Here is how you can convert your family visit visa to a Hayya visa.

Recent Updates

OCTOBER 2022 UPDATE: From 1 November to 23 December 2022, visitors’ entry into the State of Qatar will be restricted to holders of the Hayya Cards only. Visit visa services will be suspended during this period. The following categories will be excluded from the Hayya Card requirement:
– Qatari citizens, residents and GCC citizens holding a Qatari ID card
– Holders of personal recruitment visas and work entry permits
– Humanitarian cases through the airport (based on the approval from the official application platform)

AUGUST 2022 UPDATE: Once the family visit visa is approved, the visitor is now required to enter the country within 30 days of the visa approval date. Earlier, this was 90 days from the visa approval date. This date is shown as visa validity on the visa page.

Current Status of Family Visit Visa

After the suspension of various visit visa services to Qatar in 2020, the Ministry of Interior has resumed accepting family visit visa applications from all nationalities, including India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, and the Philippines.

Qatar residents who wish to bring family members on a visit visa can now fill in the application details and submit relevant documents through the Metrash2 app. Note that visit visa processing may be delayed during the FIFA World Cup.

Age Limit For Qatar Family Visit Visa

Currently, there is an age limit of 60 years for issuing a family visit visa. The Metrash system does not accept applications if the visitor’s age is above 60 years. In such cases, you can see if the visitor is eligible for a visa on arrival.

Travel Insurance Requirement

Travel insurance with coverage for healthcare services in Qatar is now mandatory to apply for a family visit visa (from July 2021). The insurance document should be uploaded to Metrash2 or submitted in person while applying for a visa.

Salary Requirement for Qatar Family Visit Visa

The minimum salary required to apply for a family visit visa in Qatar for spouses and children is QR 5,000 (USD 1,373).

A minimum salary of QR 10,000 (USD 2,747) is required to apply for a family visit visa for other relatives.

In 2018, Qatar introduced an online system using which residents can apply for family visit visas through Metrash2 or MOI website.

Through this service, you can upload all the required documents in the allocated fields, track the application status and pay the fees electronically once approved.

03 JULY 2022 UPDATE: Please keep in mind that recently there has been an increase in the number of rejections and delays in processing family visit visas. However, there is no official announcement regarding this.

Earlier, the time taken for processing the family visit visa was a maximum of one week. Since the visa applications were resumed in 2021, it is taking up to 4 weeks for many people. So please plan accordingly.

Applying Family Visit Visa Offline

For the offline application, you would need a completed application form [Download the form here] in addition to other documents mentioned above. You may also get this application form filled out from any typing centre.

You may also need the following documents:

  • Take originals of your Passport, QID and Letter from the employer for verification if needed.
  • Take a copy of your Tenancy Contract / Kahramaa Bill as proof of where the visitor will stay while in Qatar (often, this is not required).
  • If you are on your spouse’s sponsorship and the tenancy contract is in your spouse’s name, you will need to supply a marriage certificate to show proof of relationship.

Take the required documents to any Ministry of Interior (MoI) service centre. Take a token number from Reception, and wait for your turn. When your number is displayed on the screen, go to the counter and submit the documents.

Sometimes they would write the comments on your application and ask you to meet the Captain for final approval. The Captain will decide if your application can be accepted. If found satisfactory, you would be given a receipt and asked to check after 2-3 working days.

After two days, check the status online through the link on the receipt. If you have Metrash 2 installed on your phone, you will be notified of the status change.

If the visa is approved, you can pay the visa fees online via Metrash2 or the MoI Service Centre. The visa can be downloaded at this link.

How To Extend Family Visit Visa

As the initial visa is issued for one month only, the sponsor has to do the visa extension within the first month to avoid any penalty.

Relatives wishing to stay beyond one month must undergo a medical test within a few days. Here is the detailed process of doing a medical test for a visit visa extension.

Once the medical examination is passed, the visit visa can be extended online using the Metrash mobile app (Visa –> Visa Services –> Extend Visa) or by visiting any MOI service centre.

Family Visit Visa Fees

A fee of QAR 200 applies for each visa and QAR 50 for each registered dependent or companion.

The visa can be extended by paying QAR 200 per month (QAR 50 per month for the companion).

  • Medical check-up for visa extension costs QAR 100.
  • QR 200 per day is the fine for overstaying beyond the allowed period.

Bonus Points To Note

Even if the visitor plans to stay for more than one month, the return ticket should be within the end of the first 30 days.

Since the initial visa is for 30 days only, some airlines may not allow the visitor to board the flight if the return journey is scheduled after 30 days. Once the visitor reaches Qatar, the ticket dates can be modified.

As this is an online visa, some airlines may require “OK to Board” status in their system before departure. You can get this status by showing the visa copy to the airline’s Doha office.

Please see the MOPH website for the latest updates. As the rules can be revised at any time, we strongly recommend you check this regularly for any changes that may affect your plans.

  1. Hi team, my cousin got RP permit last month now if she want to go Qatar on November 1 , will be she approved to enter Qatar with RP visa or she will also need Hayya Card ?

    1. Doha Guides Team

Hi Salma, The new entry rule for new RP is not clear yet. As per the current rule, new RP holders need Ehteraz pre-travel approval. Most probably Ehteraz approval system may be stopped from 1 November. Overall things may be chaotic on 1 November as even the airline staff at the departure airport will be confused about the rules. Our advice is to enter by the end of October.

  2. Hi dohaguide
I have applied for my family resident visa.if i got approval on this month last, will i be able to take them to qatar.
My question:is there any rule that novmber 1 onwards only hayya card holder are allowed to enter qatar?.is there any restriction for entry to other visa holders like new family resident visa during world cup?

    1. Doha Guides Team

Hi Ayman, It is not clear yet as currently, new visa holders need Ehteraz pre-travel approval, but Ehteraz approval may be stopped next month. Entry requirements for new visas are not announced yet. Once you get the visa, call +974-4406 9999 to check.

  3. Hi DG. My wife in Qatar under the family visit visa. It will expire 10th of December, and she will go to my country. My questions are,
    1. Can I apply family visit visa again on January 2023? Is there any restricted time period for next application?
    2. Can I apply family residency visa on January 2023? Is there any restricted time period for residency application once visit visa has been expired?

    1. Doha Guides Team

Hi Lakmal, (1) As per the current rule, you must wait 180 days before applying for another family visit visa. (2) There is no time restriction on a family residence visa. You can apply at any time.

  4. Hai DG Team,
    Thanks for your updates.
Just one doubt, if my wife enter in to Qatar for family visit visa by this month, can I able to extend the validity of visa in next month.

    1. Doha Guides Team

Hi Fenil, Sorry we can’t confirm that, as visa rules keep changing due to World Cup. You can call +974-4406 9999 and ask.

  5. Hi team , thanks for advising me previous day .
And you guys are working very good , It’s a very helpful website .

Today I want to ask you that , if my husband buy a ticket for me than what will be the procedure for me to enter the Qatar .
    Note: I’ve a baby age 4yrs , & I’m from Bangladesh.

  6. Hi DG, I have a quick question. My wife is on a family visit visa and will be expired by 7th of November 2022, take note as i have already extended for an additional of 2 months, she landed here in 7th of Aug 2022. My question is can i extend an additional of a month until worldcup as we have also bought the tickets.

    1. Doha Guides Team

Hi Altamash, You need to take Hayya Card for your wife. After 1 November, go to the Airport Immigration and request for visa status change. They can change the visa status in the system to be Hayya visitor. There may be fee for this. Hayya visitors can stay till the end of the World Cup. This is what we heard from the Hayya support team now. Hopefully this will be the procedure. If it is not possible your wife will have to exit and re-enter using Hayya.

  7. Hi team,
I want to know about Hayya Card procedure.
Is a resident can invite his family with Hayya card? Or is it applicable only for overseas card holders?

    1. Doha Guides Team

Hi Salma, As per the latest announcement, only international ticket-holders can invite non-ticketed guests. Qatar residents cannot invite non-ticket holders.

      1. That means if someone’s husband/wife or any other family members who working in Qatar whom has the Qatar ID but not Qatari citizens that person could not invite his /her any family members?

        1. Doha Guides Team

Hi Salma, Qatar residents cannot invite family members who don’t have match tickets. If the family member has a match ticket, they can stay with the Qatar resident (the resident needs to register as a host on the Hayya platform). International fans who have match tickets can invite (or bring with them) up to 3 more family members or friends who don’t have tickets.

  17. Hi DG, i have a query regarding family visit visa. I have applied for family visit for my wife and kid and it was rejected. I want to know how days it will take automatically to get it removed from metrash so that i can re-apply. When i applied for visa my proffession was technician in QID and now i changed it supervisor.can i get approval easily with supervisor visa or not.

    1. Hi Waseem, To remove the old application soon from the system, you may need to personally visit the MOI service centre. Supervisor is a better profession, but you need to know why the first application was rejected. Was your salary above 5000 and did you submit all documents?

        1. Hi Miks, Nowadays they don’t extend more than 90 days. 14 days extension was being given in some cases (not for all). You will need to visit Airport immigration and request.

    1. Thanks for your reply, i went to garafa immigration office to know the reason but i dint got any information y it was rejected.simply said to me visa are closed now by seeing my profession on id card.i submitted all the documents through metrash and my salary is above 7. So now i change my profession to supervisor but my old application its there in metrash. I heard its automatically get deleted after 120 days is it correct or i have to visit MOI to get it removed.

      1. Hi Waseem, Yes, your old application will get deleted automatically after a few months. Nowadays, most visit visa applications are either rejected or delayed due to World Cup entry restrictions. Changing the profession may not make much difference in that.

  18. Hii Doha guide…For permanent resident visa if we have visited Qatar on visit visa do we need to complete 180 days duration outside the country ?? Or this rule is applicable till fifa only

    1. Hi Chetan, The 180 days rule applies to family visit visa applications only. You can change to a permanent resident visa at any time.
