What is “Visa-Free Entry” to Qatar?
Visa-free entry is now the new term defining previously “visa on arrival”. According to Qatar Tourism, nothing changed except the name.
Current Requirements for Qatar Visa On Arrival
1. Citizenship
The visitor must be a citizen of an eligible country.
2. Passport Validity
The visitor’s passport must be valid for at least six months. In some cases, three-month validity is accepted/
3. Confirmed Return Tickets
The visitor must have a confirmed return or onward ticket.
4. Accommodation
The visitor should have a confirmed accommodation (clear address and contacts of the local host) or a hotel reservation for the duration of the stay. This can be a regular hotel booking for travellers from most countries. For hotel booking, we recommend TripAdvisor as it has the largest database of hotel reviews.
Discover Qatar Hotel Requirement
The Ministry of Interior (MOI) currently requires travellers holding passports from some countries to book a Discover Qatar Visa on Arrival (VOA) hotel package before travelling to Qatar.
- For nationals of India, although the official Visit Qatar website currently states only that “a hotel booking on arrival is required,” the Discover Qatar site explicitly includes India in the list of nationalities for which a hotel booking through Discover Qatar is mandatory. Therefore, please double‑check your eligibility before travelling.

- Nationals of Pakistan, Thailand and Iran are still required to book hotels through the Discover Qatar website. The hotel reservation should be for the entire duration of the stay. Hotel reservations from other websites are not accepted. Citizens of other countries may book their hotel through any website.
- A minimum of 2 nights should be booked through the Discover Qatar website. Cancellations within 48 hours of arrival are subject to a 100% cancellation fee.
- Even if you book a hotel for a longer stay, the initial visa will be valid for 30 days only. To extend your stay, you must visit any MOI Service Centre or the Airport Immigration office, as online extensions may not be available for certain nationalities.
- This requirement is only mandatory for travellers coming on a visa on arrival and not for Hayya visas or family visit visas.
Please note that additional nationalities may be included in this requirement at the discretion of the State of Qatar. For the latest details on visa regulations and entry conditions, visit the official Visit Qatar website.
5. Health Insurance
Since February 2023, health insurance has been mandatory for visitors who are staying for more than 30 days. Insurance is highly recommended even for visitors staying less than 30 days, but it is not mandatory.
Visitors can buy basic health insurance for QAR 50 (for 30 days) from any registered insurance company listed on the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) website.
6. Proof of Funds
Visitors from countries like India, Pakistan, Thailand, and Iran (using a visa-on-arrival facility) are required to have a valid international credit card or debit card. Cash of QR 5,000 will no longer be accepted (Belarus nationals can show USD 1,000 in cash).
- For debit cardholders, a three-month bank statement is also required. There should be a minimum balance equivalent to at least QR 5,000 in your local currency.
- The card should be under the name of the visitor. If you are travelling together as a family, one card (under the family head’s name) is enough.
- This rule applies only to nationalities that require proof of funds (like India, Pakistan, Thailand, Iran, etc.)

Hi,
My last entry date to enter Qatar is tomorrow,June 16, 2023 but for some reason I cannot make it, can I reapply again for tourist visa eventhough I didnt enter Qatar?
Hi Navie, You can reapply once the visa expires.
Hello,
I’m am a dual USA and Pakistani citizen holding valid passports for both countries. I am travelling to Hajj this with a valid Hajj eVISA on Pakistani passport.
Since I’m travelling on 2 separate airline tickets (JFK – Doha on Qatar) and Doha to Jeddah on Saudi Airlines) with a stay of 10 hours at Doha before departing flight to Jeddah for Hajj, what do I need to do to get my luggage from baggage claim area on first flight ? Do I need a transit visa and if so can I get that easily at Doha airport and at what cost?
I would appreciate a quick response.
Thank you.
Hi Fazal, You will need to exit through immigration to collect the baggage. So a visa will be required. Online transit visa is currently suspended. Since you have two separate airlines, Qatar Airways will not issue transit visa. You have two options:
(1) Either you can apply for a Tourist Visa in advance. But this may require hotel booking. The application process is explained here: https://www.dohaguides.com/how-to-apply-qatar-tourist-visa-online/
(2) The easier option is that as a US citizen you can get visa on arrival. If they ask for hotel booking or insurance, show your next flight ticket and inform you are going for Hajj and will not leave airport. Don’t show Pakistan passport as Visa On Arrival rules are complicated for Pakistan citizens.
Dzień dobry,
Wraz z partnerem wracając do Polski z Seszeli mamy 8 h tranzyt w Doha. Lecimy liniami katarskimi.
Hi,
I am from the UK. Do I need to provide proof of hotel booking? If so what proof is required.
Or is hotel details sufficient?
Hi Hungoo, It is better to book a hotel and cancel once you arrive. Some officers may ask for it, while most will not ask.
I have an Albanian passport but I am a permanent resident of Greece. I will be on a cruise from Barcelona to Dubai and the ship will stop in Doha for one day from 7:00 to 17:00 and continue to UAE. I will fly directly back to Greece upon disembarkation in Dubai.
Do I need to prearrange a transit visa?
Hi Kosta, As Albanian citizens are not eligible for visa on arrival, you have to apply for a visa in advance. Either your can apply for Tourist Visa ( https://www.dohaguides.com/how-to-apply-qatar-tourist-visa-online/ ) or ETA Visa as you have Greek Residency ( https://www.dohaguides.com/qatar-eta-visa-online/ ). Alternatively if your cruise can arrange for a transit visa you can consider that. Usually transit visa is issued by Qatar Airways only.

Based on the updated rules as on today (May 15th), for the following nationals is there any difference between requirements for 1- “Transit Visa” and 2-“Visa On Arrival. India, Pakistan, Iran, Thailand, and Ukraine
Hi Bala, Visa On Arrival requires Discover Qatar hotel booking for citizens of these countries.
If you need Transit Visa, please contact Qatar Airways office. They can issue transit visa depending on the duration of your transit.
I just contacted ‘Qatar Airways office’. They told to buy their transit tour if I am eligible. Looks like there is some missing information about it. Because, this is what they shared with me today and bullet point “4.4 c” shows as below:
Customers/ Guests must be eligible for visa-free entry or have valid transit visa or be eligible for visa on arrival to purchase a Discover Qatar Transit Tour.
https://www.discoverqatar.qa/terms.php
Hi Bala, Thanks for sharing this. You can check with them if a purchasing a Discover Qatar tour would make you eligible (instead of DQ hotel booking).

Hi Bello, Sure, there is no restriction for any nationality. Follow these steps: https://www.dohaguides.com/how-to-apply-qatar-tourist-visa-online/
Hello, My parents and my daughter (six years old) and I came to Qatar in March 20th. I have the work visa but due to I failed the finger prints 3 times and went to INK, also due to the Ramanda and Eid holiday, my QID is still on going now. my parents are Hayya Visitors and my kid is visa on arrival. only her stay validity in on May 18th. Is there some way to extend 1 month only to my kid? for me I am not able to take with my kid and go outside Qatar and then come back becasue the work visa is only single entry until I have my QID.
Thank you very much for the steer.
Hi Terry, You can go to any MOI Service Center and try to meet the captain. Explain the situation and make a request. Often they are accommodating and flexible in case of children. Meanwhile you can discuss with your employer to speed up your QID process. As the Immigration office is back to normal, your QID process could be completed soon.
Thank you very much for the suggestion.
You are welcome. Good luck!
Recently Qatar opened One year visit visa, it’s true?
Hi Sayeed, There is no such visit visa. There is Hayya With Me visa which is valid until January 2024. Here are the details: https://www.dohaguides.com/hayya-card-holders-can-bring-non-ticket-holders/
Good Day,
Thank you for this great source of information it has been hugely helpful.
I have accepted a contract based in Qatar, as a contractor. My start date is 1st July but I plan to travel over with my family 1st June to see my Mum who is a Resident in Qatar. I would like to stay with my kids rather than travel across first. Once I have my RP, Can I apply for their RPs while they’re on a Visa on arrival? We’re coming from New Zealand.
Thank you for your thoughts,
Nico
Hi Nico, Thanks for your kind words and congrats on your job! As New Zealand citizens, your family can get 30 days Visa On Arrival which can be further extended for 30 more days. However, applying for Family RP requires 6 months bank statement (unless you are working with government or a public sector employer). A workaround is to apply for a Family Visit Visa, which can be extended for up to 6 months and apply for Family RP once you have completed 6 months in total. This is what most private employees do to bring their families. One challenge you may face is that children may not get school admission without Family RP. You can discuss with your employer’s PRO and see if they have a solution to get Family RP earlier.
I am planning to travel qatar by road with my family from Saudi Arabia I am a iqama holder my family is on MVV what are the requirements, I will be going to meet my relatives in qatar , my nationally is indian.

Hi Mohsin, Visa on arrival for Indians require Discover Qatar hotel booking (even if you are staying with relatives). So it is better that you apply for newly launched GCC Resident Visa through Hayya portal. More details are here: https://www.dohaguides.com/qatar-visa-on-arrival-for-gcc-residents/
can moroccan citizen with UK residence apply for visa on arrival to Qatar?
Hi Younes, As UK resident, you can apply for ETA through Hayya website.
