Qatar Visa On Arrival: Requirements & Updates (2024)

Doha Guides Team regularly reviews this article to ensure the content is up-to-date and accurate. The last editorial review and update were on 02 February 2024.

Since August 2017, the State of Qatar has been allowing visa-free entry for citizens of more than 80 countries, making it the most open country in the Middle East.

After it was briefly suspended in 2020 due to COVID-19, Qatar’s visa-on-arrival service has resumed with some conditions. As of 2024, citizens of 90+ countries are eligible for a free Qatar Visa On Arrival.

This article explains all the requirements, eligible nationalities, application procedures, and visa renewal procedures, and answers the frequently asked questions about the free visa on arrival in Qatar.

Visa-Free Entry

Visa-free entry is now the new term defining previously “visa on arrival”. According to Qatar Tourism, nothing changed except the name.

Qatar Visa On Arrival New Rules & Updates

JANUARY 2024 STATUS

Currently, Visa-on-arrival is available for nationals of more than 90 countries.

Nationals of India, Pakistan, Iran, Thailand, and Ukraine are still required to book hotels through the Discover Qatar website. The hotel reservation should be for the entire duration of the stay. Hotel reservations from other websites are not accepted. Citizens of other countries may book their hotel through any website.

Purchasing a visitor’s health insurance is now required for an extension of visa on arrival.

Requirements for Qatar Visa On Arrival

1. Citizenship

The visitor must be a citizen of an eligible country (the list of countries is given below).

2. Passport Validity

The visitor’s passport must be valid for at least six months.

3. Confirmed Return Tickets

The visitor must have a confirmed return or onward ticket.

4. Accommodation

The visitor should have a confirmed accommodation (clear address and contacts of the local host) or hotel reservation for the duration of the stay. This can be a regular hotel booking for travellers from most countries. For hotel booking, we recommend TripAdvisor as it has the largest database of hotel reviews.

However, for citizens of India, Pakistan, Iran, Thailand and Ukraine, the hotel booking for the entire duration of the stay should be through the Discover Qatar website. Staying with a Qatar resident or booking directly with a hotel is not accepted for these nationalities (to avail visa on arrival).

A minimum of 2 nights should be booked through the Discover Qatar website. Cancellations within 48 hours of arrival are subject to a 100% cancellation fee.

Please note that even if you book the hotel for a longer duration, the initial visa issued will be for 30 days only. You need to extend that by visiting any MOI Service Center or the Airport Immigration office. The online extension may not be possible for these nationalities.

This requirement is only mandatory for travellers coming on a visa on arrival and not for family visit visas.

5. Health Insurance

As per the new law launched in February 2023, health insurance is mandatory for visitors who are staying for more than 30 days. Insurance is highly recommended even for visitors staying less than 30 days, but it is not mandatory.

Visitors can buy basic health insurance for QAR 50 (for 30 days) from any registered insurance company listed on the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) website.

6. Proof of Funds

From 10 March 2022, visitors from countries like India, Pakistan, Thailand, and Iran (using a visa-on-arrival facility) are required to have a valid international credit card or debit card. Cash of QR 5,000 will no longer be accepted (Belarus nationals can show USD 1,000 in cash).

  • For debit cardholders, a three-month bank statement is also required. There should be a minimum balance equivalent to at least QR 5,000 in your local currency.
  • The card should be under the name of the visitor. If you are travelling together as a family, one card (under the family head’s name) is enough.
  • This rule applies only to nationalities that require proof of funds (like India, Pakistan, Thailand, Iran, etc.)

Procedure At the Immigration Counter

  2. At the immigration counter in Doha, mention that you want a visa on arrival.
  3. Give the hotel’s / host’s contact details (name, contact number) if you are asked.
  4. Show credit or debit card if required (for some nationalities only)
  5. When asked, look at the camera for an iris scan (eye scan). A green light would blink to confirm this.
  6. A fingerprint scan may be required for some passengers.
  7. The immigration officer would fix a small sticker on your passport. That’s it. Welcome to Doha!

  4. Hi,

My wife is planning to visit me from South Africa using Visa on Arrival. Will she need to book a hotel for the duration of her stay? Or, can she fill in my address, show my lease agreement as proof, and marriage certificate to avoid hotel booking?

Also, will she be required to book a return ticket or will a one way ticket suffice?

    1. Hi Ameer, 1) Your home address may be accepted in Qatar, but the issue is that the airline may not allow her to check-in without a hotel reservation. This is because hotel reservation is part of the official requirement. So it is better that you book a hotel that can be cancelled free of charge upon arrival. Better be safe than have last-minute issues.
      2) Return ticket within 30 days is compulsory for visa on arrival.

  5. Hi, Thanks for the elaborate information. I have few queries regarding visit visa for my mother.

      3. Yes, health insurance is required for family visit visas.

    1. Doha Guides Team

Hi Abod, Please call the Government helpline on +974-44069999 to check. When you call, make sure to check about your wife and children also. Since UAE is now on Red List and your wife is unvaccinated, you may require 7 days hotel quarantine.

  10. Hi, for someone who is travelling from india, Is it required to show hotel booking for their complete stay i.e., 30-60 days? or just quarantine hotel booking is enough?

    1. Doha Guides Team

Hi Ahmed, Quarantine booking + Hotel booking for the remaining days (until the date of return flight) is required. You can cancel the hotel once you reach Qatar. Note that the return ticket has to be within 30 days. You can change the date only after you extend the visa.

    1. Doha Guides Team

HI Khan, We guess that page has not been updated for a long time. Now it is possible to extend for 30 more days and we know many people who did it this recently.

  11. Hi ,
Can you please share some detail for returning back to airport for connecting flight , do we have to do PCR test, if our PCR test is negative and have been done in last 72 hours.

  12. Hi, My daughter is 3 years old and planning to visit Qatar from India with vaccinated parent. Is it possible to get on arrival visa?

    1. Doha Guides Team

Hi Chander, Please call 109 (inside Qatar) or 44069999 to check as some clarification is needed about visa on arrival for children from Exceptional Red list countries.

  13. Hello, looking for information on family members traveling as visitors from a red list country with visa on arrival.
Would they be required to undergo hotel quarantine or are they able to quarantine at home? If home quarantine:
    1. Information of family members residing in Doha (qid, house address) to be uploaded on Ehteraz pre-registration?
    2. Would a PCR test after arrival be required, when and where?
    Thanks in advance

    1. Doha Guides Team

Hi Zol, MOPH website says: “The following categories will be subject to home quarantine for two days or until the test result appears: First-degree relatives, including children less than (18) years of age arriving to Qatar.” You can call 109 (inside Qatar) or 44069999 to reconfirm. PCR Test has to be done before travel as well as within 36 hours of arrival (from any private clinic).

  14. My daughter is 4 and is not vaccinated (no vaccines available for 2-5 yrs old) and is a US citizen coming from the US. Given that there is no visa on arrival for her, is there any alternate path for her to enter the country for 1 day (stop over journey) ? Appreciate your guide and help!

    1. Hi Parry, Since she is coming from the US which is a green list country, she may be allowed to enter with vaccinated parents. Please check with Government Contact Center on 974-44069999.

    1. Doha Guides Team

Hi Simon, Health insurance is mandatory for a visit visa. If you are coming on a visa on arrival it is not yet mandatory. However, it may soon be needed and we strongly advise taking insurance as visitors will not get health coverage without insurance.

  15. Hi, I have a couple of questions:
1- I heard from other people that health insurance is needed nowadays. Is this true?
2- My husband (US citizen) is coming back next week (he is an ex-resident; he canceled his contract and residency a couple of months ago) and our apartment is still under his name. Does he still need to book a hotel booking or no need since he can show the documents that there is an apartment under his name?

Hope to hear from you. Thank you in advance.

    1. Hi KC, 1) Health insurance is mandatory for a visit visa. If he is coming on a visa on arrival it is not yet mandatory. However, it may soon be needed and we strongly advise taking insurance as visitors will not get health coverage without insurance.
      2) Regarding hotel booking, it is better that he makes a hotel booking that can be cancelled after arrival. Since this is a mandatory requirement for a visa on arrival, he may be rejected Ehteraz entry permit. If it is rejected he will not have enough time to explain the situation and make another application. After arrival, he can cancel the booking and stay at his apartment.

  16. What about the green card holder in the United States of American and their nationality is for example they still holding a Philippines passport. When they check on the MOI website or in Qatar Airways website it clearly say that whoever have a permanent resident card to any country that mention they will eligible to get the Electronic Travel Authorization to get approved to have visa on arrival to qatar. Apparently like what the article says because of covid the website is down. But still approved by the Etheraz app travel permit to enter 🇶🇦 qatar. And when they call Qatar Airways and MOI they don’t know the answer with that situation and they don’t even know about the ETA when I t clearly said their the one who should ask about.

      1. Thank you for that information that you’ve given me fortunately, I called them and explained what happened to me during my trip to doha still nobody can answer the questions that I’ve asked them. This pandemic the ministry of public health suspended the website on how can you obtain Electronic Travel Authorization so we can be eligible to get visa on arrival. I was wondering if the Etheraz Pre travel registration was the permit to enter Qatar was already like a Electronic Travel Authorization. cause even though you holding a American passport or any nationality that was approved to get visa free waiver if you do not have that pre travel Permit from that etheraz you will not be able to enter Qatar until that pre registration in Etheraz was completed and approved correct?

        1. Hi Nikolla, You are right. All visitors need Ehteraz pre-travel registration (even for visa on arrival).

  17. Hi…
Now family visit visa can be Extend for only 3months..So can we Travel to Dubai for Exit and come back next day with new visa?? So Quarantine is needed?? Plz rply

    1. Hi Trinity, First of all, check with MOI if you can immediately get a new visa after you exit. We heard there are some restrictions nowadays. Also, note that a family visit visa may not be approved in a single day. Hotel quarantine will not be needed for vaccinated travellers as UAE is a green list country, but visitors need a PCR test before travelling back to Qatar. So consider more time for that.

  18. Hello Team,
Family visit visa is extend for how many days ?? For family residents visa what should be the salary ?? Please reply

    1. Doha Guides Team

Hi Kanchan, Family visit duration used to be 6 months for spouse/parents etc. Nowadays they are extending only 3 months for some people. For a resident visa, the minimum salary is officially QR 10,000. However, these days only QR 15,000 or above is being processed quickly. There is no official announcement on the change of requirement.

        1. Doha Guides Team

Hi, When they resumed processing after suspension, they were only processing above 20,000. Now they are processing above 15,000. Only the Ministry knows their future plans. Let’s hope they would start above 10,000 in coming weeks once the pending applications are cleared.
