Many expatriate women residing in Qatar go to their home countries during pregnancy as they want to be close to their extended family during the delivery.
When they come back, Qatar provides free visas on arrival for newborn babies, provided they arrive in Qatar within few months of their birth. This article explains the conditions required to receive an on-arrival visa for baby born outside Qatar.
Conditions To Get Visa For Baby Born Outside Qatar
Earlier, Qatar’s Ministry of Interior had tweeted the conditions for issuing on-arrival visas for babies born outside Qatar on arrival at the port of entry.
According to MoI, here are the conditions for granting an on-arrival visa for a baby born outside Qatar:
1) Residence Permit for father and mother
It is an absolute must that the father and mother should have valid Residence Permits in Qatar
2) The baby should be no more than six months old
The baby cannot be more than six months old. If the parents cannot bring the baby to Qatar before they reach six months, they must apply for a Family Residence Permit first.
2023 UPDATE: Babies less than six months will be allowed entry to Qatar if mother is under father’s sponsorship. However please note that:
Babies entering Qatar before two months will be issued a New Born Visa, which can be directly converted to a Residence Visa. With this visa, the parent can easily apply for issuing QID.
If the baby is older than two months, a Tourist Visa will be issued (valid for 30 days) instead of a Newborn Visa. This means that the parent has to start the baby’s Residence Permit process from scratch (submitting all documents and waiting for approval). After the RP has been approved, the parent will have to pay QR 500 for the conversion from a Tourist Visa to a Residence Visa. This process will be more expensive and time-consuming than a New Born visa.
So it is advisable to enter Qatar before the baby turns two months.
3) The wife should be on the sponsorship of the husband
Another condition is that the wife should be under the husband’s sponsorship. If the father and mother are under company sponsorships, they cannot get a visa on arrival for the baby.
4) Original birth certificate and a valid passport for the baby
You should also bring the original birth certificate for the baby. A copy of the birth certificate may not be accepted. Also, the baby should have a valid passport from your home country.
Cost of the Visa
The visa is provided free of cost for newborn babies on arrival along with their parents at the entry border.
Once the baby enters Qatar, the parents must apply for a Residence Permit Card (QID) through Metrash2 or any Ministry of Interior Service Centre.
Another thing to remember is that if the mother has stayed out of Qatar for more than six months, it would be considered an overstay, and she would need a return permit to come back.
If your baby is older than six months, please check with Qatar Government Helpline at +974-44069999 regarding your options.

Dear DG,
Thanks for this well-written article.
My wife is holding QID under my sponsorship.
I am planning to bring my wife and 3.5-month-old newborn to Qatar. As per the information, I will get a 1-month tourist visa for him and will then apply for his RP on Metrash by uploading all the docs. If the Metrash approval will take more than a month, then how can I get the extension of his tourist visa unless got the approval from Metrash?
Please guide.
Hi Waqas, Usually it won’t take more than a month in the case of babies (if parents have QID). If it is not approved after 2-3 weeks, visit the MOI Service Center and meet the Captain. Either he will extend the Tourist Visa or will approve RP. The officials are very accommodating in such cases.
Thanks for the reply.
Is there also any other way to extend tourist visa like online instead of visiting the MOI service center?
Hi Waqas, You can try here: https://portal.moi.gov.qa/wps/portal/MOIInternet/services/inquiries/visaservices/visitvisaextension
Not sure if it will work in case of infants.
Hi DG,
Is medical insurance required for bringing 3 month baby on visa on arrival
Hi Mohideen, Yes, insurance is required for babies also.
Hi, earlier you had answered to my query that health insurance is not required for babies less than 6 months. Thanks
Hi Rakshith, Your question was about bringing a baby born outside when parents are QID holders (tourist visas issued for babies less than 6 months).
Here the question is about visa on arrival, which is a different scenario (Mohideen did not mention anything about parents being residents).
My baby is 3 months and 2 weeks (wife has QID and I’m the sponsor) and he entered Qatar and got a family newborn visa I was able to convert it to QID immediately through Metrash2.
To know what kind of visa your baby has once the baby entered Qatar you will receive an sms with a number go to the link below and check what type of visa it is
https://portal.moi.gov.qa/wps/portal/MOIInternet/services/inquiries/visaservices/enquiryandprinting
if it is family newborn login to metrash go to residency services click on next you will see the baby visa entry their click on next upload baby photo baby signature(just name) and filll the other info then put delivery address and pay.
You can call 109 and get all the information if you have any doubt.
Thank you KSV, This will be helpful to others.
My wife has a job in Qatar, and her visa is ready for printing. I’m looking to apply for a visit visa for our 1-year and 8-month-old baby through Metrash2, so they can travel together.
Additionally, once my wife obtains her QID, is it possible to add our baby as her dependent?
Your guidance on these matters would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Jes, If you have a job in Qatar with a salary above QR 5000 you can apply family visit visa for your child. This can be extended for up to 6 months. Your wife can sponsor the baby for RP if your combined income is above QR 10,000. But she will need to complete her QID formalities and start receiving salary by WPS. Normally few months of salary transfer is required for this.
Hi Doha Guides Team,
Please clarify for new born babies entering Qatar after 2 months, on entry only tourist visa will be issued and new born visa will be issued only if the baby is 2 months or lesser.
As we got information from other sources that new born visa will be issued on entry if the baby is 3 months or lesser, not 2 months.
Please confirm this
Hi Deepak, Since it is not clearly mentioned on the official websites, it depends on the issuing officer. Before 2 months you will get newborn visa. Some officers even give between 2 and 3 months. Between 3 and 6 months most of them give tourist visa only.
What if the parents is under different company sponsorship and they bring their new born, it says its not allowed? My question is there any way to bring the child in qatar
Hi Rus, In such cases, for the first time, you can bring the child on visa on arrival (if the nationality is eligible) or on Hayya A1 Tourist Visa (you need to apply this in advance). Later on the mother can apply for sponsoring the baby (if the salary meets requirements). If the RP application is not approved you will have to send the baby back.
Firstly, I would like to express my gratitude for the comprehensive information you provided on this topic. My wife and our daughter will be arriving in Qatar during 1st week of February 2024. Our daughter will be 4.5 months old then. Please clarify some of my doubts:
1. As per your post, my daughter will get tourist visa (free of cost) on arrival, and I don’t have to apply any prior visa for her. Am I correct?
2. Does my daughter need mandatory health insurance?
3. Would she need a return ticket?
4. How long is this tourist visa valid? how much time I have to convert it in to QID?
5. In the event I initiate visa application for my daughter via Metrash2 before her intended arrival date and the process remains pending by 1st week of Feb, will she be permitted to enter Qatar on tourist visa?
Thank you.
Hi Rakshith, Assuming your wife is a Qatar resident under your sponsorship:
1) Your baby under 6 months can get a visa on arrival.
2) Health insurance is not needed.
3) A return ticket is not needed.
4) You should change to QID within 2 months. Usually, the visa is valid for one month and can be extended for one more month if required. Try to do the QID process as soon as possible.
5) You can apply on Metrash before they arrive.
Note: These answers are based on the recent experience of others. Since visa policies are subject to change, please double-check with the Government helpline on 109.

Hi John Paul, Attestation is not required during entry. It is needed only during QID application. You will need attestation from your country’s Embassy in Qatar and Qatar’s MOFA in Doha.

Dear DG,
I have applied for family RP on 15th October for my wife and daughter and it is still under process.
Now I want to apply for my second new born baby tow month old. So, what is the process? Need birth certificate attestation for apply RP ? or Passport and birth certificate (without attestation) are sufficient.
Hi Zafar, Attestation is not required if the birth certificate was issued in Qatar. You can apply with passport and birth certificate.
Dear DG Team,
My baby was born outside Qatar, and my family is in india.
So, Pls. advise, attestation on birth certificate is required for RP apply.
Hi Zafar, Attestation is required for Family RP if child is born outside Qatar.
I already have family RP for my wife and the baby was born outside Qatar visa, So if I bring the baby after 2 months do I have to submit all the documents (salary, education, etc.) from the beginning or is it possible to convert on arrival visa directly to QID
Hi Kasun, If the baby is less than 6 months and parents have RP, she can get visa on arrival. Usually newborn visa is issued for babies less than 2 months and tourist visa issued if the baby is between 2 and 6 months. After entry to Qatar you can visit MOI and request them for Family RP. If it is tourist visa you may be required to submit all documents and pay visa conversion fee of QR 500. If it is newborn visa you only need to pay Family RP fee.

Hi Syaif, This article is only applicable if your wife has Qatar Residence Permit. If your wife is coming on family visit visa, you should get apply for a family visit visa for your baby also.

Hi Rehab, After the baby was born in Qatar, you left Qatar without applying for QID?
Good day.
I want to ask if i still can get visa on arrival for my baby even if im under company sponsorship not under husband sponsorship. Our flight will be tomorrow.
Hi Aisha, This option is applicable only when mother is under family sponsorship. However some people get visa on arrival for baby if their nationality is eligible. Please check with the Qatar Government Helpline at +974-44069999 or [email protected].
Dear Team,
Should i get home country attestation on birth certificate to obtain new born visa? or the original English version is enough?
Thanks in advance.
Hi Raj, For Family RP birth certificate attestation is being asked (in some cases). For Family Visit Visa, it is not required.
Can I do Birth certification attestation after entering Qatar on new born visa? as for RP it is required
Hi Mohammed, Yes, you can do it after entry.
Hey!
When applying for new born RP which paper should we upload as birth certificate?
The original certificate or the attested or translated certificate as there is only one option for birth certificate.
And which document should we upload for other document?
Hi Raees, You should upload front side on “Birth Certificate ” and the attested back side (with stamps) on “Others”.
Is it the translated front side of the birth certificate or the original one?
I am really confused.
Hi Raees, If it is English or Arabic, no need of translation. When you do the attestation of the original certificate, there will be stamps on the back side. You have to upload this side on “Others” tab. Note that if the baby was born in Qatar, certificate attestation is not needed.
