About Al Thumama Stadium

As many international flights descend over Al Thumama, fans may get their first glimpse of Al Thumama Stadium from above. Its brilliant white exterior stands out among the lush green surroundings.

Its design is inspired by the “gahfiya”, the traditional woven cap worn by men and boys all over the Arab world. Gahfiya symbolises dignity and independence – a milestone moment on every young boy’s path to adulthood.

Al Thumama Stadium

It is also the only completely circular FIFA World Cup 2022™ Stadium. With its dynamic and imaginative shape, Al Thumama Stadium celebrates both local cultures and traditions.

Al Thumama Stadium was inaugurated on 22 October 2021 when it hosted the Amir Cup final between Al Sadd and Al Rayyan.

Al Thumama Stadium Legacy and Sustainability

More than 80% of Al Thumama Stadium’s landscaping is covered with natural vegetation. Al Thumama Stadium has achieved a Global Sustainability Assessment System 5-star rating for design and construction.

According to the FIFA website, Al Thumama Stadium’s tournament capacity (40,000) has been reduced to meet local needs and provide quality sporting infrastructure to developing nations.

The remaining 20,000-seat arena will be used for football and other sporting events.

The precinct surrounding the stadium will become a community hub with facilities for multiple sports, including handball, volleyball, basketball and swimming. Tracks for running and cycling will weave their way around the precinct as well, providing an outlet for sportsmen and women of every stripe.

A branch of a sports clinic will open on-site, as well as a boutique hotel, which will replace the stadium’s upper stands.

There will also be a number of retail and commercial units created to ensure the area becomes a bustling hub of exercise and activity.
